My Dear Compatriots
For a week now, to the day, our dear country Niger has been experiencing major events linked to a new intervention of the Defence and Security Forces in the political arena with the seizure of power by force.
At this critical moment in the history of our country, it is my duty to reiterate my principled opposition to the seizure of state power by unconstitutional means and in flagrant violation of the laws and regulations of the Republic. However, it is important to stress that the responsibility for this situation lies entirely with the players of the defunct regime who themselves came to power through “repeated electoral holdups” and managed the country with poor governance, corruption, exclusion, nepotism, mismanagement, favoritism, which has have contributed to a generalized insecurity throughout the national territory.
At this stage, it is now important to work together and to involve all good wishes at the national and international level with a view to ensuring a return to a normal constitutional order, through a political transition of a reasonable duration. In this perspective, I oppose any attempt of foreign military intervention, I also oppose any sanction whose harmful effects on the already bruised populations will only aggravate the already catastrophic situation created by the effects of twelve years of disastrous management of the fallen regime.
This is why I call on the entire Niger people and Niger’s friends to mobilize in order to defeat this “double standards” approach observed by certain people, certain groups, certain institutions and even certain states. This is why the regional, continental and international community must rather contribute through diplomatic channels and material support to the search of a negotiated peaceful solution and a successful Political Transition for Niger.
