Interview with Gerard Colomb,European Specialist on Hydrogen

The Cotonou Times: How do you assess the energy situation in the West African countries that you know?

Gérard Colomb  : Africa must look at the global evolution of economies, particularly  “the new economy” based on non-polluting renewable energies (green hydrogen).

The Cotonou Times: What is in your view  the best strategy for electrifying rural or remote areas?

Gérard Colomb  : To have total autonomy in rural or isolated areas, you must have energy available 24 hours a day, which requires energy storage (tank type) where hydrogen will be available at the request of consumers.

The Cotonou Times: What role should African states assign to the private sector?

Gérard Colomb  :  African countries must have an energy development plan and use the expertise of local private companies capable of carrying out studies as well as commissioning of the equipment. There is also a need to establish constant dialogue between the local private sector and equipment suppliers. The establishment of training centers for new energy technologies should also be encouraged by the authorities. African governments should also include in their budget, the creation of factories in order to obtain full energy independence. African countries must be aware of their natural potential (sun and water).

The Cotonou Times: For several years, solar energy has appeared as an alternative for many African individuals and businesses. What is your opinion on this technology?

Gérard Colomb   Solar energy has undergone major technological advances in recent years. On the market, although guaranteed solar panels exist, the main problem is the non-production of energy at night which prevents energy from being stored during this period.

The Cotonou Times: You are one of the major European specialists on hydrogen; please tell us how this energy solution offers many advantages to African countries.

Gérard Colomb  : To produce hydrogen one needs an electrical source (solar panels, wind turbine) to power an electrolyzer (electrolysis of the water molecule) Africa has a great solar potential and its economic development is more likely to be achieved thanks to the agri-food sector.
