Bridging gaps in radiotherapy support for cancer care

THE recent announcement by the Federal Government of a 20-year electricity transmission development plan looks persuasive on the surface, like every other ambitious long-term plan the government has gone into. A document presented to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola by the Interim Managing Director of the Federal Government-owned Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, Mr. Usman Gur Mohammed, targets the wheeling capacity of 10,000 megawatts by 2020 and moving up to 28,000 megawatts by 2030.
RADIOTHERAPY is one of the major modalities of treatment and care for common cancers. On average, radiotherapy is recommended for 52 per cent of cancer patients. Inequality in access to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care continues to make reducing premature deaths from cancer difficult. The International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, recognises that while at least 55 per cent of all cancers in Africa could respond to radiotherapy, radiotherapy is available to only five per cent of the African population...Read More
